# CareTransparency — Healthcare Transparency Atlas

> Plain-language safety and quality snapshots for every U.S. hospital and nursing home. Independent, static, and sourced only from official U.S. public datasets. Built for speed, clarity, and accountability.

CareTransparency shows facility-level “at-a-glance” pages, state and owner roll-ups, and periodic reports. Pages are pre-rendered HTML (no accounts; no forms). Each page displays a “Last updated” month and cites the underlying public dataset in human-readable terms.

## Data sources (official U.S. public datasets)

- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare / Hospital & Nursing Home public files
- Hospital ER Timeliness (OP-18b analogs), Readmissions, Complications, HCAHPS (patient experience)
- Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) staffing, Nursing Home Quality Measures (QM), and Health Inspection results
- Ownership/chain information as published by CMS/HHS

Exact files and transforms are documented in the repository; processed CSV/JSON live under /data/processed/ and are compiled into static pages at build time.

## Update cadence & reproducibility

- Refresh schedule: monthly (target: first of each month, early UTC).
- Build: one command generates a complete static site; sitemaps and robots are written at build time.
- Freshness: each page shows “Last updated: Month Year,” reflecting the dataset vintage used in that build.

## Scoring & fairness

- Overall Score (0–100) is **state-normalized** using within-state percentiles and documented weights.
- Outliers are winsorized; missing data leads to a no-score message rather than imputed values.
- Full details live on /methodology.html (weights, signs, and missing-data rules).

## Ads & independence

- Exactly two ad slots per facility and report page (one under key scores; one before “Nearby alternatives”).
- No sticky, no pop-ups, no sponsored placements, no pay-for-rank. 
- Footer note: “Ads help keep this public data free. We do not accept sponsored placements.”

## How AI and researchers may use this content

- **Non-commercial use**: You may quote short passages and summarize with:
  1) a visible hyperlink to the specific page used, and  
  2) attribution: “Source: CareTransparency.org.”
- **Commercial training/embedding, mass scraping, or republication**: **Not permitted** without written permission.
- Do not suggest our pages endorse a facility, treatment, or product. This site is **informational only** and not medical advice.
- Please include our “Last updated” month if you reproduce a figure, rank, or score.

## Corrections & transparency

- We welcome documented corrections at corrections@caretransparency.org. Provide a source link or citation.
- If an official dataset is revised, we reflect it in the next scheduled monthly build (or sooner if material).
